Suspended between sea and sky above the Amalfi Coast

Perched on the edge of a cliff above the hilltop town of Ravello, more than 1,100 feet above the Tyrrhenian Sea, Caruso is one of those rare hotels that stops you in your tracks. An 11th-century palazzo originally built by the noble d'Afflitto family, it was transformed into a hotel in 1893 by Pantaleone Caruso and has drawn an extraordinary cast of guests ever since: Virginia Woolf, Greta Garbo, Jackie Kennedy, Gore Vidal. The Belmond collection acquired it in 2005 following a complete restoration that preserved the original frescoes, vaulted ceilings and stone archways while adding every modern comfort. The result is a property that feels simultaneously ancient and immaculate.

The hotel's 50 rooms and suites are furnished with local antiques and Neapolitan-influenced decor, most offering private terraces or garden access with views over the coastline below. But it is the infinity pool, carved into the cliff at the highest point of Ravello and seemingly suspended between sea and sky, that has made Caruso famous the world over. At Ristorante Belvedere, fine dining takes place on an open terrace framed by the coast, where executive chef's seasonal menus celebrate the produce of Campania. For something more relaxed, the poolside Caruso Grill serves Neapolitan pizzas, fresh pasta and salads against that same extraordinary view.

"At Caruso, the view is not a backdrop. It is the experience itself."

Beyond the pool and terrace, the hotel offers complimentary daily boat excursions along the Amalfi Coast in its traditional wooden motorboat, a shuttle service to Amalfi and Positano, and a spa set within fragrant subtropical gardens. The private Villa Margherita, tucked within the estate grounds, provides an extraordinary option for those seeking complete seclusion, with butler service, a private chef and uninterrupted views of the sea. Open seasonally from April through October, Caruso rewards those who plan ahead.
